Whitehead Railway Museum

The award-winning Whitehead Railway Museum, head-quarters of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI), combines the past with the present and offers a unique visitor experience. Visitors will find five fascinating galleries wrapped around the existing RPSI railway workshops. You can rub shoulders with the giants of the steam age and learn how they work. And you can see work in progress on the restoration and maintenance of the RPSI’s 10 steam engines and five diesel locomotives. In a restored dining car you will find a display all about railway catering and how the railways developed landmark hotels such as the Slieve Donard in Newcastle.

Visit the signal box and pull the levers for yourself. Fire your children’s imaginations by letting them try out period–style clothes and make believe they are about to board an express train. Step aboard the footplate of our 140 year old steam locomotive and walk through historic carriages. And spend time in the stables building where an attractive display tells how the railways changed society, liberated people and developed Whitehead from a sleepy hamlet into a stylish Victorian resort.

The Edwardian Tea Room is designed to evoke memories of the traditional railway refreshment room and is housed in the Station Building, which is an accurate recreation of the erstwhile Whiteabbey Station.
