Weinmuseum | Die Kathedrale des Weins

L’Espluga de Francoli is a wine-making town some 30 km north of Tarragona. The ‘wine cathedral’ is the name often given to this amazing early twentieth century building, which consists of three vaulted bays in red brick in the Gothic style. It was begin in 1913 by the architect Lluis Domenech I Montaner and completed by his son Pere Domenech I Roura and is in a mixture of the Art Nouveau style that the style that succeeded it in Spain that is usually called Nouventrism. After consolidation in the 1990s, the building continues to be used by winemakers at part of the local agricultural co-operative, but the working parts are accessible to the public, and it also incorporates a wine museum.
