Deutsches Knopfmuseum

The town of Bärnau in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz), 48 km south-east of Hof, has for centuries been one of the chief sources of buttons in Germany, and the industry continues today.

The museum, located in a former brewery and opened in 1975, displays the town’s products, the machines that have been used to make them, and the extraordinary variety of buttons made in the different countries of Europe. The museum’s collection totals more than a million buttons made of 26 different materials, including wood, ivory, glass and mother of pearl.
